In almost all amateur or novice groups, either the founder, or the owner of the most powerful energy for crowds, or someone who simply does not know how to play the instruments becomes a screaming mouth. If you want to learn how to sing correctly, and so that your vocals are not confused with the sounds of bowel movements, then you need to learn at least the basics of correctly setting the voice.
These rules are applied in academic vocals, after which, in principle, you can sing whatever your heart desires. Even if, by nature, everything works out and sounds good, and all the muscles are designed by Orpheus himself, training with a professional will still be very useful.
How to learn to sing: breathing
The important part, one of the basics. The breath in the vocals is taken not by the breast, but by the entire lower abdomen, and this is an axiom. In the air is inhaled only through the nose, you can forget about quick and loud breaths through the mouth. The breath is held by the diaphragm, and there are two subtle points. Firstly, it cannot be kept relaxed, as the sound simply will not connect to the air. Secondly, it is not easy to strain it, since in this case the sound will not connect either, but will “break away” from the breath, which is clamped by the diaphragm and prevents the voice from going outside.
If the respiratory support is correctly set, when the air connects to the sound, you will feel a kind of pillar that will go from the throat to the inguinal region during the next howl. Also important is the air flow when singing. For the correct understanding of the principle, I advise you to take a full breath and gradually, as slowly as possible, exhale the air. Like in a yoga class. With the wrong expense, you simply won’t be able to finish even two or three lines of the text, frantically inhaling oxygen, as if you were drowned in a basin. In general, to understand how to take and hold your breath correctly is one of the simplest, but at the same time main tasks in vocals, and this is what they do first.
Rid the body of the clamps and open your mouth correctly
The next important task, without which it is impossible to learn to sing normally, is to remove the clamps of your body, in particular, from the neck to the crown. Frankly speaking, there are often exceptions and a person initially sings well, without feeling or understanding how he manages to sing freely. But there are very few such people.
The muscles involved in singing are several tens, and each should work in the correct mode. If you hear that your singing leaves much to be desired, and at the first lesson they said that there are restraints, then get ready: in the next few months you will have to diligently eliminate them. He pressed his throat a little - the sound was lousy, but he did not open his mouth to the end - the sound was lousy, his lips gave birth and his chin pinched - the sound was still lousy!
To sound right, you have to remember one thing: the lower jaw and the entire lower part of the head, including the neck, should be as relaxed as possible, like a sleeping beauty. You should not feel the slightest tension in these zones, since in the opposite case the sound will be held by these muscles, not allowing it to come out in full. Even when the back of the neck is straining, it affects the sound, since it affects all other muscles.
When singing, the lower jaw should simply fall down, since we open the mouth with the upper jaw. As soon as you remove all the tightness and completely relax the lower part of the head and neck, you will immediately feel the difference. A wook will fly out calmly, without any obstacles. Some people could not even imagine that they could have such a voice and were sincerely surprised by their new sound. In general, when the sound does not hold and does not remain inside the body, it can fly very far, so much so that in the early morning on a deserted street you can be heard from almost the other end of the city.
But that is not all. When all the restraints are removed, the next and most important moment comes.
Open and hold your throat open
We all have a second mouth. No, not like the Alien. I mean the part of the body where all food first falls and all alcohol is poured, and you need to learn how to feel and control it. Just opening your regular mouth properly will not help you tear apart the crowds of young fans.
The pharynx, or second mouth, should work in sync with your regular mouth. And if for the latter you only need to choose the optimal parameters, then you should open the throat well and keep it all the time, until the end of your musical career. On the topmost notes, you need to do this so that the tongue that hangs in your upper sky goes up completely when the sound with air starts to fly out of your mouth.
Simply put, you should pull the upper sky up, while lowering the larynx as well. The simplest example to understand is a yawn. When you yawn, pay attention to how freely and widely your throat is revealed. Now you must learn to do this without the natural mechanisms of your body. Of course, you don’t need to open your mouth like that over the entire range, but on the topmost notes you should feel the so-called pre-yawn.
There is another example to understand the sensations. If you swallowed a large piece of food that you did not fully chew, then remember how slowly it went down the throat. That’s how you should open it. The main thing is to learn not to strain the root of the tongue and the language itself. So he will close the passage of your second mouth. If, during singing, your throat is not sufficiently opened, the sound will be weak and dull, heterogeneous.
In addition, you should try to open the throat and sing in an upright position, and not in a horizontal one, for a more collected and sonorous sound, raising the palatine curtain up. In order to learn how to do all this, as well as help your muscles adapt to new work faster, you can start with the simplest and at the same time very effective way. Try to read all articles or books by ear every day, while pronouncing everything in an open throat. Another great training would be to do the same with tongue twisters.
Sound direction forward, operation with resonators
The next step is to direct the sound forward and toward the resonators. Depending on the type of voice, you will have different advantages in the musical ranges. If your type is tenor, then you will have strong tops, but a weak chest cavity. If the bass, then the chest will respond with a bang, but the head register will be lame. After exercising for several years, you will, of course, even out your voice over your entire range. However, this is a difficult and routine work that needs to be devoted to time.
Leaving the resonators, since working with them should take place last, we pay attention to an important thing - the direction of sound. As it often happens in the world of vocals, the best method is to feel, visualize and imagine. The whole wook should go out, forward, and not stay in you. One of the points for its direction is the place between the roots of the teeth and the upper hard palate.
The direction of sound and stuffing resonators is a very long and difficult task, if you achieve mastery in it, you can proudly call yourself a reference vocalist. After mastering these skills, exercises on the technique remain. Since there is no limit to perfection, it is possible and necessary to do them constantly and endlessly.
Everyone can learn to sing correctly. It is important to understand that each person has his own range and voice potential, so you will not necessarily sound like Luciano Pavarotti, but most likely you can learn to sing like Sting. However, without the help of a mentor, all this will be difficult to do, since evaluating oneself is not easy.
We are just setting out or the basic principles of the correct vocal setting, but if you want to sound cool and sound correctly, and most importantly, to be a professional, then you should go to the teacher. Preferably starting with academic vocals. Remember that voice is also a tool, and to fake it is even worse than everything else.
Before you learn to sing, you need to decide what it is for. Because singing in different styles differs in much the same way as driving a truck from kart racing. By and large, there are two main schools: Old Italian and Western. Italian is a classic vocal; it is almost impossible to learn it at a good level independently.
In addition, the classics are narrowly specialized: you can sing only what is intended for your range (tenor, baritone or bass). You cannot change the tonality of a work and even the power of sound - just as Tchaikovsky or Wagner wrote, they did. Western is more about pop and rock, which means it’s suitable for karaoke or a career as a rock star, if you have something in mind.
Learning folk vocals on your own is almost certain to break your voice: there is a more active and abrupt beginning of sound, which means that the load on the ligaments is very high.
Firstly, it is just useful. Secondly, while swimming, you can sing something, and then be surprised to learn that you did one of the best vocal exercises. When swimming, the press and the diaphragm are strained, and these are just those parts of the body that should be loaded with proper singing. Therefore, swimming with a song fixes the correct intercostal-diaphragmatic type of breathing.
When tilting, take a deep and quick breath with your nose, and when straightening, exhale slowly. This will teach you the right pace of breathing while singing.
Put your arms bent at the elbows in front of the chest parallel to the floor. And now sharply hug yourself with a sharp breath. This exercise develops the lower part of the lungs, which the singers need in their work.
Snort like a horse.
Or like a jockey when he says tprrrrruu. That is, forcefully blow air out of your mouth so that your lips funny and quickly flop around each other. With this sound, the ligaments close correctly. This exercise, coined by renowned educator Seth Riggs, who was taught by all the greats, from Michael Jackson to Hvorostovsky, helps to develop the range. If, for example, a note is not given, you must first sing it with such a snort, and then try to pick it up as usual.
Waking up in the morning, mumble some tune. Firstly, a friend will consider you eccentric and creative, which has not bothered anyone. Secondly, you train your ligaments in this way and learn to feel your voice better and, therefore, to use it.
Before vocal lessons, stretch, stretch your neck at the back, shake your arms and legs. Singing is physical labor, and if the body is tense somewhere, especially the neck, then with high notes there is immediately a clamp in the throat. If you watch the performances of the artists, you will notice that they often take a high note with some action - for example, throwing a hat to the side or clapping their hands. This is because a short sharp action immediately leads to relaxation and muscle clamps are removed.
Even if Shufutinsky stepped in your ear, you can develop your ear for music to an acceptable level. Get yourself a piano, or at least a simple keyboard synthesizer. You take a note and try to get in unison with it. Then another. If you don’t hear well, hit or not, record yourself on the recorder and adjust.
This is necessary to prepare the ligaments for work. You can chant, “snorting a horse” a simple melody or doing the above exercise to develop hearing. You can mumble notes, starting from the lowest that you can pick up to the very top. Or in the same way, from the bottom to the top note, sing “ma-me-mi-mo-mu” and then from top to bottom “mi-me-ma-mo-mu”. At the same time, train the diction.
You need some pretty simple songs, better in English. Suitable, for example, Brian Adams, Limp Bizkit, Metallica. In English - not out of snobbery, but because Western singers are usually more properly equipped with sound production techniques. Then you learn the text and begin to sing with a plus, that is, together with the performer. Your task is not to sing perfectly, but to feel how you sound and to copy intonations. Bands with a sharp sound like Korn should not be taken at this stage to avoid ligament injuries. Matthew Bellamy also needs to be grown.
Hold on to your gender.
Boys should imitate boys, girls - girls. And there is no intolerance here. It’s just that if an experienced singer understands that Rihanna needs to sing like Phil Collins, and Seal sounds like Shade, then the novice singer will easily overcome the sexual discrepancy. When you learn, then you can sing anything. Well, except for Zemfira, who has all the songs from her first female face.
Improvise under the backing track.
Having learned to more or less copy the singer, start a backing track - record a song without vocals - and sing under it. Again, the task is not to sing perfectly, but to develop skills and musical thinking. To do this, improvise, add your own, mumble a recitative, insert additional musical phrases - the main thing is to tone. And record on a dictaphone: a singing person often does not hear himself correctly.
What helps to sing
If you can talk, then you can sing. Physiologically, singing is slightly different from speech, but the pattern of voice formation remains the same.
A man speaks and sings while exhaling. Air passes through closed vocal cords, they oscillate and create a sound. The sound itself from the ligaments is very weak, but in the mouth or nose it is amplified to a normal volume. Lips, tongue and teeth help shape speech.
Resonators are responsible for the quality and volume of singing. Resonance is a reflection of sound. The guitar has a resonator on the deck, apart from it the string sounds quietly, but the deck amplifies the sound, making it deeper. Our body is like a guitar deck. Its resonators are the chest, head, mouth and nasal cavity. The room is also a resonator. First, the sound resonates inside the person, and then outside. Therefore, we like to sing in the shower - there is good acoustics.
We have an acoustic ear. With it, we hear noise, sounds and words. But besides external sounds, we unconsciously listen to ourselves. It helps us manage voice and speech. Almost all deaf people can talk. Their speech apparatus is in perfect order, but the lack of hearing prevents them from managing - the speech is illegible.
To fully listen and perform songs, you need a well-developed musical ear. It helps to distinguish sounds by color, pitch, volume and duration. There are many types of musical hearing and each is important in its own way.
To sing well, you need to train your breathing, ear for music and a sense of rhythm, and plan your classes wisely. We will tell you more about these things.
Train your breath
There are different types of breathing, but for starters it is enough to feel the difference between chest and abdominal. When the chest expands, the chest expands sharply - it is difficult to control. With abdominal breathing, the chest does not move, but the stomach is inflated and the lower ribs expand. This type of breathing is better for singing because with it we control the exhalation better.
We breathe in our stomachs in a dream, but we are not aware of this. One of the first tasks is to learn to breathe in the stomach consciously, especially while singing. Watch your breath when lying down - it’s easier to feel the diaphragm. There are no secret methods, you just need to accustom the body.
Develop your ear for music
Musical hearing helps the voice to fall into the notes. The brain picks up sound and evaluates by height, timbre, volume and other characteristics. Singing and solfeggio help in the development of hearing.
Musical hearing is absolute and relative. Absolute hearing is the ability to name the note of each sound as a memory. Relative - the ability to auditively determine the distance between two notes.
People who have no musical ear at all do not exist. It's just that for some it is completely undeveloped. If you can listen to the melody, and then repeat it with your voice, congratulations, you have a rumor. And the more nuances you hear and realize, the better.
If you are not able to understand whether you fall into the notes or not, your musical ear is probably underdeveloped. In this case, you need to start with the basics. That is, with one note. You need to find a note that you hear and sing well (at least one of them is at all) and gradually add neighboring notes to it. In this situation, the help of a teacher is needed.
And if you perceive music well and hear falsehood in someone else's voice, but you cannot sing well, then you have a weak coordination between hearing and voice. You have the ability to perceive music, it remains to teach the voice apparatus to make the right sounds.
Develop a sense of rhythm
Rhythm in simple words is the duration of sounds and pauses. He tells vocalists when to start and end the sound. Sense of rhythm can also be trained.
When listening to a song, try to understand its rhythm. Clap and stomp to the beat. If you are walking down the street, step or click. For example, a song lasts four minutes - go exactly at that pace and click on the same beat. It helps.
Rhythm is not only in music. It is in the text, verse, simple speech and singing. To sing well, you need to learn to feel the rhythm of a song with and without a melody. When you learn a song, try to keep the beat without music. Download the metronome to your phone and read it like a poem. Then, under the metronome, sing the song melody separately from the words. Each sound of the voice should fall into the share of the metronome, and not dangle between snaps.
Can do at home
Beginners in any class have one problem - they need more and faster. Get plenty of pancakes on the bar to get strong faster. Get plenty of things in hand so you don’t go twice and get home faster. Load a voice more to learn to sing faster. But the result is always the same - broken backs, torn packages and a ripped off voice.
If you want to learn how to sing with the help of video tutorials, choose a teacher you trust. It doesn’t work fast, don’t even try. But there are ways to safely speed up learning:
Gradually go beyond the possibilities and shake the boundaries. But do not worry: excessive tension will deprive you of a voice, and then you will have to leave classes for a while. After tense moments, do a comfortable exercise, so that the ligaments calm down, come to a natural position.
Forget about talent and age
Talent is the knowledge that we gain unconsciously. For example, from parents, friends or acquaintances. If someone lives in a family of singers, then he gets an advantage. He sees parents singing, remembers and learns better. But it’s good to sing from birth - no one can.
A child learns any new knowledge better than an adult - this is a fact. It is easier for him to develop diction and hearing, to train his breath. But adults can learn to sing. It will be a little harder, but still possible. Desire is much more important than your age and talent.
There are medical restrictions on singing. Doctors do not recommend teaching children to sing in the choir during the mutation of the voice (13-15 years). You can not sing at high body temperature and high blood pressure, heart disease and respiratory tract. But these are restrictions only on focused vocals. Everyone can sing for the soul.
Usually we worry when we need to sing in public. We sing alone at home, but it is worth it to appear to an outsider, and the voice disappears. Confusion overtakes in the classroom. But the teacher is an experienced person, he knows how natural excitement is, and will help you overcome it.
This is what we do in the classroom, and what can be repeated at home with loved ones.
You can learn to sing without anything at all. But such training will be long and useless. Good training requires a metronome, feedback, theory and some kind of music, of course. A tuner or piano may also come in handy.
Helps to keep the right rhythm. They use it in lessons and performances. They develop a sense of rhythm with him. It is inexpensive, but very useful. Turn it on in class. Teachers usually have their own, and you can just download it to your phone: we can safely recommend iMetronome for iOS and MetronomeBeats for Android.
Usually a teacher helps. He evaluates singing and says that you are doing well and what is bad, tells you how to do better. You can record yourself on a recorder or camera and evaluate yourself. Of course, this is not so effective, but without feedback it is much worse.
Include your favorite songs and sing. But you have to hear yourself, so try to listen to music from the speakers, not the headphones. This will help to remember the rhythm, tonality and mood of the song. Yes, and so words can be learned faster.
Without practice, the theory makes no sense, but as a supplement it is useful. There are many articles on the Internet about singing, but usually they are written by lay people. It is better to read books that study in music colleges, they can be found on websites or in college libraries. You can also learn theory from video tutorials. There are a lot of these on YouTube. Practical exercises are also full there, but you need to choose them carefully.
There are too many singing exercises on the Internet. To get started, you need breathing exercises, diction, ear for music, a sense of rhythm, and staging. But you need to choose carefully. Using video tutorials, you can absolutely easily do breathing exercises, diction and a sense of rhythm. But the musical ear and voice - it is very individual. In the absence of other options, you can also try to develop them using video, but it is unlikely to be effective.
Make bends: legs shoulder-width apart, arms along the body. When bending over, actively inhale with your mouth, straighten up - calmly exhale with your nose. You need to do twelve sets of eight slopes every day. It trains breathing well.
Good old tongue twisters will help here. You need to not just read them at a frantic speed: it is important to do this legibly and clearly. To do this, start at a slow pace and gradually accelerate. Different tongue twisters work for different sounds. Alternate them.
You can learn from video tutorials or books, but this is a very dangerous path. Voice casting is an individual process. You need to correctly determine the range, develop voice mobility, learn to hear yourself, look for your own resonator, reveal your own timbre, and most importantly - do it right. Without an experienced teacher - it is almost impossible.
The teacher looks at you from the side, and this is his main role. He appreciates singing and notices mistakes. Says how to fix them. The theory of singing can be found in books and videos, but without practice it is of little use. You can practice yourself, but without observation it is easy to learn incorrectly. A professional teacher will help you achieve the result faster.
Organizes the system
If you thoughtlessly watch a video or read articles, you can get to adherents of different training systems. Each has its own methods and emphasis. Classes with one teacher guarantee integrity and consistency. He purposefully leads you to the result. Home schooling, as a rule, is unsystematic, and therefore takes more time and effort.
To find a good teacher, come to a test lesson at school. See if you are comfortable with the person. But to understand whether this teacher helps you or not, you can only after a few lessons. The main thing is that he does not force or force to sing to break. If after the lesson you still have physical discomfort or too much fatigue, then something is going wrong.
At the initial stages, the vocal apparatus is strongly developed and it physically exhausts. But fatigue should be natural, as after the gym, and should not torment you. If something constantly hurts after classes, share with the teacher, and he will adjust the program or indicate an error. The more comfortable you feel, the greater results you will achieve.
