Here is a Burda magazine with patterns, tracing paper, a ruler, a piece of fabric, a tailor's chalk, threads, needles, scissors and, of course, a sewing machine. So what's next? Where to start to learn how to sew?

Reasons to master cutting and sewing

There are many reasons to want to learn how to sew on your own. From the desire to learn a new and very useful skill or to show creative abilities to a way to save money or even just out of necessity. First of all, sewing craft is so multifaceted - this is sewing clothes, and sewing home decor, and creating beautiful things for children or grandchildren, and fakes, and patchwork, and recycling of old things and much more. And recently, independent sewing is mentioned in such terms as “stylish”, “innovative”, “fashion forward”.

At the same time, many people are stopped by the very idea of the technical components of sewing: winding the bobbin, that if the needle breaks or the thread runs out on the spool, how to insert a zipper or make loops ... The little things overwhelm, all this seems too complicated, and so many never try learn sewing, despite the desire. But the benefits of sewing outweigh the unfounded fears.

How to learn to sew clothes from scratch? Mastering the craft of sewing is quite possible for everyone, with motivation and practice. On the other hand, it is important to know and remember that sewing is a process that requires patience. Gradually, mastering step by step, from simple to complex projects, sewing will teach you to be a patient and passionate person and you will want to sew all the time.

The main motivating reasons to learn how to sew and tailor from scratch yourself:

  1. Think that sewing fosters self-esteem and fosters a sense of independence. It doesn’t matter if you remake the clothes purchased in the store or a completely new thing is created, this is an amazing feeling - to realize that you can do it yourself!
  2. Sewing helps save money. For example, you need to replace a zipper, hem jeans or repair a hole, all you need is two scissors, a strong spool of thread and a reliable sewing machine.
  3. Having learned to sew, you will never meet your “reflection”. Perhaps the woman is more worried about this than the man, but in general, most people are stewed, being face to face with someone who is dressed in the same clothes.
  4. Sewing stimulates the expression of your personality. Today it is especially important to “be obsessed” with brands. But making clothes with your own hands means that you are not limited by the framework of “authoritative” opinions about what is fashionable or what should be worn this season. You yourself dictate the trend! And believe me, you will have a completely different attitude to shopping. A visit to the mall will be associated more with finding inspiration for sewing than spending money. Perhaps you will pay attention to a specific fabric, color combination or finish, find a way to incorporate this into your wardrobe and really impress your friends and acquaintances.
  5. Sewing allows you to reprofile almost everything made of fabric. Old curtains can turn into exquisite pillowcases for pillows, a used blanket to become a new shower curtain, a nice shirt for a little girl or a fashionable skirt will be made from a man’s shirt, and an old pillow will turn into a decorative pillow.
  6. Sewing can also provide new career potential. After practicing and going from a beginner to an experienced specialist, you can sew custom-made decorative towels or make a luxurious bedspread, fix upholstery on upholstered furniture or do amazing things, sew bags, accessories, clothes for pets.
  7. Why not try to sew haute couture clothes yourself, create your own masterpiece, enlisting patterns and guides on the fabrics. Without sewing skills, designers cannot work.

Sewing is good for your health - it is a fact. According to scientific studies, sewing calms the nerves, contributes to the proper functioning of the body. If sewing helps patients with a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder to overcome the disease, then, of course, it will help us to relax after experienced stress, for example, received at work. Sewing stimulates the mind - when choosing fabrics, patterns, design and the process itself. Sewing skills, measurement and stitching, nourish the brain cells, preparing them to solve more complex problems in the future. Isn't that amazing?

You can learn to sew and cut at the courses of cutting and sewing

If you have patience and zeal, then you can learn to sew and tailor yourself. However, generally accepted practice still provides for vocational training in any specialty, including at the amateur level, whether it is driving a car or the ability to sew and cut.
A qualified specialist will competently and briefly be able to explain all the features of the technology of tailoring and tailoring, teach how to work on a sewing machine, learn to understand modern fabrics and materials, and much more.
Paid training courses for cutting and tailoring, only conditionally paid. In fact, training gives you the opportunity to return the money spent, saving on sewing clothes for yourself and your loved ones after training. In addition, if you are a capable and accurate student, the acquired knowledge can be made a source of additional income.
However, training in the courses will require a lot of time, including money. And not always this training can be effective, since any theoretical knowledge should be immediately fixed by practice. The courses in which you only have to write down the theory will not bring any benefit. The best warrant for training in courses should include the practical tailoring of the product by your standards in the premises of the classroom and at home, with the consolidation of theoretical material in practice.

Sewing machine for beginners to learn to sew.

Almost any clothing can be sewn on an old Podolsk-type sewing machine. Especially such a sewing machine is suitable for beginners, those who only learn the basics of sewing art at school in labor lessons. This machine is very reliable, it is almost impossible to break it, and most importantly it is not possible to sew any fabrics with it, including coarse denim and leather. Such a machine does only one operation - a straight line, but if you need a zigzag line, you can use a sewing machine such as the Seagull. Even if you do not have such a machine, you can buy it under an ad quite inexpensively.
But if you decide to learn to sew “seriously and for a long time”, then, of course, you need to purchase a modern sewing machine, taking into account your financial capabilities. The main thing is not to forget that your success in sewing skills does not depend on how much the sewing machine costs and how many types of decorative seams it can perform, but how well you know how to use the machine. For a beginning seamstress, an economy-class machine of any company is quite enough, approximately, such as in this photo.

To learn how to sew on a sewing machine, first learn how to use a simple hand-made grandmother's machine, but first carefully study the instruction manual, which indicates which needles and threads you want to use for a particular fabric and much more. Also, take the time to learn how to use all the accessories and accessories.
Keep the sewing machine clean and do not forget to periodically lubricate, then it will work without fail.
The shuttle mechanism is especially in need of cleaning and lubrication. From time to time, remove the needle plate and use a brush to clean the comb (rail) of the fabric transfer mechanism and the shuttle device from dust and fibers. A well-oiled and oiled machine runs almost silently.

If you are going to buy a sewing machine and do not know which model and company to choose, there are a number of articles on this site on the site, for example this one - Inexpensive sewing machine: "Pros and Cons".

Overlock for beginners

It often happens that when they are about to learn how to sew, they immediately buy an expensive sewing machine, a lot of sewing accessories, and even an overlock. And then it turns out that they were in a hurry, because there is no time, and most importantly, desire. A big "hunt" to learn how to sew and cut is easily discouraged by the first failed thing. Therefore, do not rush to purchase an overlock until you are sure that you really need it. At first, you can get by with a “zigzag” or a special foot that can imitate the overcast seam.

If you sew a lot and constantly, then an overlock will allow you to professionally process seams and facilitate your work. Modern household overlocks, as a rule, perform a four-thread overcasting seam and do not differ much from each other in their technical characteristics, so if you do not have enough money, you can buy an overlock of an inexpensive model from Singer, Dzhuki, Elna, etc.
You can even buy used 51 class overlocks. Its price is not more than 3 thousand rubles, however, the overcast seam can be not only three-strand, but also two-strand. But such an overlock is capable of overcasting thick draped, denim fabrics and may come in handy later on, even when you have a modern 4-thread overlock.

Sewing Accessories

Learning to sew with your own hands is impossible without special sewing tools and accessories. Of course, you will not need all of them at once, but many of them must be in your arsenal.
It is very convenient to use special tailors scissors, in which one ring is larger than the other, and the blades are inclined relative to the handle. Clerical scissors with flat blades, you will not be able to notch corners of the fabric. When processing the pocket "leaf" exactly and precisely notches can be made only with such scissors. Tailors often use zigzag scissors to cut thick draped fabrics. Cropped edges in a zigzag pattern do not require overlock processing of the edge and will facilitate the process of sewing the product.

Sewing needles for handicrafts. You will also need them for work, since the basting of parts and other operations are carried out only manually. Different types of hand needles are used and selected depending on the work performed. So, needles with a rounded end are used to connect parts from knitted fabrics with a manual seam. Such a needle gently spreads the loops and slides between them without breaking the threads.
Short sewing needles with a round eye are designed for fine stitches on thick fabric or lining stitches.
Wedge-shaped needles (a triangle section) are used to work on the skin.

Tailor's pins necessary for chipping parts during the sewing process and facilitate the work while trying on clothes. Tailor pins come in different lengths, thicknesses and, depending on this, are used to perform a particular operation.

Thimble protects the tip of the middle finger from needle sticks during manual sewing. Match the thimble to the exact size. It should be freely worn on the finger without squeezing it, but not sliding off during operation. Learn to use it by pushing the needle sideways, not the bottom. The habit of working with a thimble is developed quite quickly, it is enough to put it on and vilify for a whole day, without removing it when doing any other homework.

Thread threader - This is a loop of very thin wire fixed in a flat plate. It is used to thread the needle eye. Using the needle threader, you can remove the remaining threads on the wrong side of the product or eliminate the tightening of the thread that appears on the fabric.

How to learn how to take measurements

To learn how to sew, you need not only to be able to build a pattern, to study the sewing machine well and to know the basics of technology for sewing clothes. You must definitely learn how to take measurements. Do not think that taking measurements is easy. Unfortunately, it is precisely the wrong measurements taken that become the cause of inaccurate patterns and cuts.
It is necessary to take measurements from a person when he is in a natural position, without tension. However, with increased attention to any of us, we strain, turning from stooping to slender, "losing weight", etc. In the future, this results in poor fit of clothes or cramped items. For accurate measurements, it is advisable to take measurements several times, especially if you do not have enough experience. Some measurements need to be performed together.

Before taking measurements, you should gird the figure along the waist with a slightly stretched tape located strictly horizontally. Measurements of the girths (chest, hips) are preferably taken from the back, so ask someone to help. When measuring, stand upright, without tension, in a natural position. Measurements are preferably done on top of underwear. Do not think that taking measurements on a naked body will allow you to have more accurate measurements.
To avoid inaccuracies, the tape should not be pulled tight or held too loose. Record the results in a table.

When constructing a dress pattern, it is necessary to take many additional measures. The list of measurements for constructing a dress pattern can be found in this article.

Acquaintance with a sewing machine

Before you sit down at the typewriter, carefully read the instructions for it. Learn how to thread, understand the settings, how to set them correctly, for example, for a straight or zigzag stitch. What can be used threads and needles for sewing on your sewing machine.

Take shreds of different fabrics and try to make the main seams: straight stitch, zig-zag, buttonhole stitching. See how a machine behaves with a particular fabric. Write in a notebook all the settings that you used, changed during operation and with which fabric.

For the line to be straight, you will have to practice more than once. It is very good to practice this skill on towels, tacks, gradually complicating the task, for example, stitching a tablecloth or bedding.

Choose a model

For the first experience, choose simple patterns with a minimum of details and seams. Start with a skirt with an elastic band, pajama pants, tops without tucks.

In Burda magazines, all simple models have special notation.

Use old things, or inexpensive cotton and linen fabrics. They are less capricious than any other fabric, it is easy to care for them, it is easy to cut and sew from them.

How to determine your size

First of all, take all the measurements off yourself and compare them with those given in the table of the magazine Burda. If the discrepancies are insignificant, then you can safely take the closest possible size that matches your standards and remove the pattern.

If, for example, your exhaust gas size corresponds to the 40th size according to the Burda table, OT - 38, OB - 42, in this case it is necessary to remove the pattern smoothly moving from one size to another.

How to translate a pattern

To translate the pattern, you will need a regular tracing paper, which you will find in any store of goods for needlework and sewing, or specialized silk paper for translating patterns. As well as a felt-tip pen, gel pen or pencil and a ruler.

Cut parts with allowances for seams of 1.5 cm and 3-4 cm for hemming the bottom of the product, unless otherwise specified in the instructions.

Sewing instructions and workshops

In the Burda magazines, each presented model has a description and sewing instructions. And for individual patterns - step-by-step master classes with illustrations of the whole process, which you will also find on our website in the corresponding section.

In addition, the special editions of Burda “Sewing Easy and Fast”, which comes out twice a year, feature models just for beginners. Simple patterns with the most detailed instructions and photos of the sequence of each step.

An excellent assistant in comprehending sewing skills will be the book “Burda. Sewing Practice ”, which can be purchased on our website.

Do not be afraid to redo, rip and grind again. Only by experience will you achieve the desired result.

Buying handmade tools

Sewing as a new hobby can be ruinous if you decide to buy all the possible equipment that is available for sewing. We are just learning the craft, and as long as we don’t need to purchase sophisticated sewing tools, it will be enough to have:

  • Scissors: large for fabric, small for threading, with serrated blades (for cutting edges). Sharp sewing scissors help maintain accurate cutting, preventing hand fatigue. You should choose high-quality scissors and spend a little more money. Tip: regularly clean the blades and periodically lubricate them, avoid excessive lengthening of the blades, trying to cut through several layers of fabric at the same time.
  • A tool for tearing seams (sewing errors occur, and such a tool removes unwanted stitches: a thin tip allows you to select individual threads, and a rounded tip removes stitches throughout the seam without tearing the fabric).
  • Measuring tape is a must-have tool. It is advisable to have several copies, including a tape measure for measuring body parameters.
  • Tailor pins and a pillow for pins (as a rule, they are filled with sawdust or pieces of wool impregnated with lanolin, which prevents pins from rusting, special pads are filled with abrasive material: this filler removes dirt and rust, keeping the tips of pins sharp and smooth).
  • Tailoring rulers: 1 m, a template for a marking and measurement, a template for allowances an isosceles square, a cutting pattern.
  • Marking tools (special chalk, marker). A very useful and economical markup tool that will be available to everyone is a piece of soap.
  • Assortment of needles for hand sewing.
  • Assortment of threads.
  • Needle threader: an optional tool for hand sewing, however, it is difficult for someone to refill the needle and may need it.
  • Steam iron and ironing board, special fabrics (in extreme cases, a piece of muslin) for pressing. Pressing and ironing are an integral part of most sewing projects.
  • Sewing awl.
  • Round cutter (circular knife for cutting fabric) and a self-healing cutting mat to protect other surfaces from damage.

To work on a simple sewing project, for example, a large woven bag, sachet or decorative pillowcase, you need only a few tools: a measuring tape, needle, thread, fabric and sewing scissors.

Before you learn to sew your own clothes, create crafts or engage in other sewing projects, a prerequisite is to master the basic stitches.

Although modern sewing machines have virtually eliminated the need for manual sewing, there are still areas where handmade seams are needed for high-quality finishes:

  • tie stitch
  • basting stitch
  • back needle stitch
  • long stitch
  • hidden (inconspicuous) seam,
  • overcast seam.

Sewing machine selection

First of all, we will clarify that there are three types of sewing machines for sewing at home: mechanical, electromechanical and computerized. The engine of the electromechanical machine is powered by the network, but everything else is controlled by gears, levers and switches. Those who are just immersed in the fascinating world of sewing are advised to start with a mechanical model. A novice tailor should not scare himself with a large number of options, especially since high-tech machines have so many functions, most of which may never have to be used in the sewing process.

Of course, a computerized sewing machine takes care of many things, such as adjusting the tension, remembering the settings and creating sequential stitches from beginning to end and in the future you may need it, but it will be right to focus on learning the basics of sewing with a good basic machine. To begin with, all you need to master is a straight line of various lengths, a zigzag and a function for sewing loops, which most modern models offer in automatic mode.

It is equally important to have a mechanical typewriter in the collection as a backup before it comes the turn to buy an electronic or computerized typewriter. Computerized machines require regular maintenance, which you will not be able to do on your own, as well as eliminate a possible problem in the system that controls the operation of the machine.

Regardless of the skill level of sewing, there are several basic functions that will be needed when choosing a mechanical machine:

  1. The base sewing machine must have at least a special buttonhole foot and regular foot. Modern entry-level sewing machines come with lots of presser feet, which is good. If you wish, you can purchase additional accessories and presser feet, but it is important to make sure that your machine is compatible with them (markings: adapter for attaching the legs is low, with an inclined needle bar).
  2. The choice of stitches (at least 10-15) will make the base model more versatile.
  3. Speed adjustment.
  4. The function of raising and lowering the needle.
  5. The function of adjusting the length and width of stitches, which is important for fine-tuning each seam (you may need different lengths and widths to create basic elements, buttonholes, stretch stitches).
  6. Reverse line function.

Save a lot of time and effort by purchasing a mechanical sewing machine with a vertical rotating shuttle (the bobbin is loaded from above, with a transparent cover) and with automatic needle filling (although this function is not available on most entry-level sewing machines, but the needle filling tool can be purchased separately )

Can I learn on my own?

If you prefer to learn the basics of the sewing craft yourself, at a calm pace, then free online lessons available, or a paper-based tutorial will be a good guide to the world of sewing. They will guide you through all the steps - from sewing in a straight line to creating loops. Can I learn to sew on my own? Of course, yes, but do not expect perfection from the very beginning, remember that sewing training requires a lot of time and practice and it is normal to make mistakes. The beginning should be accompanied by the creation of simple sewing projects, for example, household items. Sewing clothes can be a difficult task for absolute beginners, so it’s easier to start with bedspreads or decorative pillowcases.

How to learn to cut from scratch?

It is not difficult to make a pattern on your own if you know how to do it. It is better to sew your first piece of clothing from an inexpensive fabric in order to forgive yourself some mistakes that are most likely inevitable in the first steps.

Performing accurate measurements of body proportions is the key to learning how to tailor your clothes individually and well-tailored. All you need is a measuring tape, preferably a tape measure.

Learning to take measurements

Ideally, measurements are taken on underwear, a swimsuit or tight-fitting clothing, standing in front of a mirror to see that the tape is in the correct position. Depending on what part of the clothes we have to sew, we take appropriate measurements. To create a blouse pattern, we need to know the total length, shoulder length, chest circumference, waist circumference and sleeve length, for trousers - waist circumference, hip circumference, total length and size of the lower part, for a jacket - circumference above the chest, waist circumference, hips, sleeve length, waist length, total length, shoulder and back girth.

Marking measuring points will make the process much easier. For example, the neck: for the girth of the neck, we mark the center of the clavicle in front and the dominant bone in the occipital part, when measuring the tape should touch them, closing over the jugular notch. We measure the length of the shoulder from the base of the neck to the tip of the shoulder, where we feel a rounded bone. The length of the sleeve is determined by measuring the distance from the end of the shoulder to the wrist, while the hand should be freely lowered. Armhole depth: this point is located horizontally on the side seam, and vertically it should be located about 1.5 to 2.5 cm under the armpit. The best way is to put on a T-shirt, look under the arm and note where the seams converge into a cross. There is no need to mark too high or too low, because it will pull the sleeve into the armpit or make the armhole too low.

Choose sewing and sewing courses

The choice of cutting and sewing courses depends on how much you want to learn for each lesson and what you generally expect from learning. There are programs for learning the basics of sewing and sewing only basic models, for sewing underwear, for sewing children's clothes, guaranteeing how to quickly learn to sew.

There are expensive courses offering programs designed for a year of study and longer, bordering on a professional level of skill, ready to teach design and modeling of clothes, also designed for people who decide to become sewing professionals, possibly as designers or specialties related to textiles . An important role is played by the competence of teachers. What is the point of paying money for cutting and sewing courses, in which the teacher himself is essentially a self-taught person who has completed short-term courses.

On the other hand, given the huge amount of information on sewing available in special books, DVDs, YouTube videos, on many sites and blogs, is there any point in paying for courses to learn how to learn how to tailor yourself and learn the “secrets of sewing” ( which have long been disclosed). True, some people like the social aspect or the way sewing courses organize learning.

Learning to sew on your own

Sewing on your own is useful and pleasant, but only if you are not patient enough or your first results do not meet expectations, it can lead to disappointment and rejection of the idea will learn to sew in general. We do not want this to happen and are ready to start a new fascinating hobby, following step by step through all the useful information on how to learn how to sew by ourselves, perfecting each new skill, completing several simple sewing projects.

We choose a thing for tailoring

It is better to start with stylish clothes, for example, a skirt that is easy to make and assembled at the waist line, with a belt and patch pockets. This is a great project to learn how to learn how to sew on a sewing machine, process fabric, add buttons, process hem, sew pockets, and try your hand at zipper insertion.

Other models for beginners that will help to develop skills and learn to sew: tops (consolidated, “sorbet”, in the style of boho), dress - a sundress or a fashionable home dressing gown.

Seam allowance

The seam allowance is a value that is added to the details of the pattern, the distance between the stitching line and the edge of the fabric cut. Seam allowances are required:

  • to process the seams and edges of the fabric,
  • leave enough space between the edge of the cut and the stitch line and take into account the wear of the fabric,
  • leave enough fabric around the edge where the parts with seam allowances are joined together so that the front part looks seamless.

The allowance for straight seams, as a rule, is about 1-1.5 cm, for curves (armholes or collars) - 0.7-1 cm.

Sewing on a typewriter

The creative possibilities of the sewing machine are almost endless. But before using it for sewing products, you need to study your sewing machine well, which will solve almost any problem that you may encounter. Read the instructions, practice things that seem obscure. And before using the machine for sewing clothes, it is better to practice with various seams on pieces of fabric that you will not mind throwing away.

How to learn to sew clothes for yourself?

Many online resources specialize in cutting and sewing lessons, looking through which, you will learn how to learn how to sew clothes from scratch. Moreover, it is much more inspiring to sew a product that we really want to wear. But a prerequisite is the desire to learn and learn new things. Without an elementary share of patience and perseverance, we will only lose time. Before proceeding to the sewing process itself, we select the model that we want to sew, the next step is to create a pattern on paper using our measurements.

We fold the fabric in half and inside out and transfer the paper pattern onto it, securing it with pins, and draw it with chalk on the edges. To facilitate the cut and not deform the fabric, it is important to use sharp scissors. Having cut out all the details, we proceed directly to sewing. One of the first elements of sewing clothes is a tuck. A correctly made tuck will fit into the fabric and add a tight-fitting silhouette to the clothes.

How to quickly sew curtains and pelmet itself?

Curtains are a good practice for beginners familiar with the basics of sewing. For the first sewing project, we choose a lightweight cotton fabric, that is, with a structure that will facilitate the sewing process (a mixture of cotton or cotton with linen). When the necessary knowledge is obtained, the basic processing can be applied to almost any type of fabric.

Curtains can be sewn up to the windowsill, below the windowsill or to the floor, which will determine how much tissue is needed. For curtains to the floor (which add picturesqueness and softness to the room), the height from the cornice to the floor, the hem for hemming (45 cm) determine what length of fabric is needed. For curtains folded into folds, the fabric width is calculated 1.5 times wider than the actual width of the window opening (standard width of curtain fabrics: 140 cm, 280 cm, 300 cm).

The fabric needs to be washed and dried before sewing, then ironed carefully, removing all wrinkles and folds. This is an important step, so that the finished curtains do not shrink, and the seams do not fray during the first wash.

  1. Trim the edge.
  2. For a hem, we turn the side edges 1-1.2 cm (to the wrong side of the fabric) and iron.
  3. Tuck another 2.5 cm and iron. We pin the double bent edges with tailor pins (with the heads to the right of the seam, which will allow them to be easily removed during the stitching) at a distance of 10-12 cm from each other.
  4. We sew with a straight seam, placing the stitch line at a distance of about 3 mm from each inner curved edge.
  5. We turn the bottom edge 1-1.2 cm and iron it.
  6. Tuck another 10-12 cm and iron, fasten with pins as well as for the side edges.
  7. We sew the lower part (at a distance of about 3 mm from the inner curved edge) with a straight seam, but to make it more reliable, we use the reverse line at the beginning and at the end of the seam.
  8. The curtain rod or “pocket” for the eaves is done in much the same way as the bottom edge. Turn the top edge 1-1.2 cm and iron.
  9. Turn it again by 5 cm and iron, fasten with tailor pins.
  10. We sew by laying a line that fixes the folded edge, securing with a reverse line at the beginning and at the end of the seam.

To create a lambrequin on the assembly, cut off a piece of fabric relative to the length of the cornice with a fill factor of 1: 3. So, if the length of the cornice is 2 m, then we need fabrics 6 meters long and of a certain height (40-50 cm). We process the lower edge and lateral edges into a hem. Sew the curtain tape to the upper edge, and then process the fabric.

We participate in contests

Competitions and master classes for lovers of sewing are organized by clubs of lovers of sewing, sewing schools, professional magazines for sewing, offering one or another idea (for example, a competition of summer dresses) and inviting all lovers of sewing to participate. They are organized by any country. The rules for participating in sewing contests are simple: a photograph of a self-sewn product should be presented.
